THE PALAZZO TAVERNA OF MONTE GIORDANO
VIII CENTURIES OF HISTORY
MAGNIFICENT PALACE RISES IMPOSINGLY IN THE HEART OF ROME, ON A SMALL ARTIFICIAL HILL WHICH APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN FORMED BY THE WASTE OF THE NEARBY SMALL PORT ON THE RIVER TIBER..
The Palace belonged to the Orsini Family since 1286 but the Romans used to call "Mons Ursinorum" the small hill on which the enormous building was constructed. Even Dante Alighieri himself in his XVIII Canto of Hell remembers how, during the Jubilee of 13th century, the Pilgrims going to the Vatican, on one side they would have faced Castel Sant'Angelo "...and they go to St.Peter; on the other side they go towards the mount" referring in this case to the Orsini Mount. In the year 1328, the mount took the name of Mount Giordano, the name of Giordano Orsini, Roman Senator in 1341.
The very ancient Orsini Family added various wings to the building which around the year 1400 started to trasform the small turreted block house (redoubt) into a complex of elegant buildings, divided among the various families - the Earls of Pitigliano, the Dukes of Bracciano and the Signori of Marino.
When, at the beginning of the year 1600, the Earls of Pitigliano moved to Tuscany, their palace was bought by the Dukes of Bracciano who had a bridge built in order to connect the new palace to theirs and in the year 1618 the famous F.A. Casoni was ordered to build a splendid fountain called "dell'Acqua Paola" in the 14th century courtyard.
But in 1688, after five hundred years of uninterrupted ownerhip, Flavio Orsini, burdened by debts, was obliged to sell the property to the Gabrielli Family.
The Gabrielli, a very old and noble Roman family, completed the unification of the complex building by acquiring the property of the Signori di Marino and all the houses surroundimg the mount, taking care to restore and modernize the connections between the two palaces which belonged to the Braccianos and Pitiglianos and in the year 1700 they also modified the "Acqua Paola" Fontain
to the marvel you can admire today.
The construction of turreted tower in medieval style called "Augusta", in honor of an important component of the family took place in only 1880.
In the year 1888, when all the family died, the great complex of buildings was sold to the Earls Taverna of Milan and they are the actual owners.
